How To Use Social bookmarking to promote your Online business

Social bookmarking is one of the most popular ways to surf the internet for information. It is basically the online version of a bulletin board. A bulletin board is a place where you post information for the rest of the world to see. People who are interested in what you posted will read it and the rest will move on.

Social bookmarking uses the same concept. In a social bookmarking site, people will post a link to website along with a short introduction. These sites are free. When people visit these sites, they look at the board and read the introductions. If they are interested, they click on the links.

Social bookmarking goes one step ahead here. Since there are thousands of links posted everyday, they have a rating system. Registered members can not only visit the sites, but they can rate the links, high or low. A high rated link will appear on the front page of the bulletin board and a low ranked link will stay in the back pages and soon be forgotten.

The beauty of social bookmarking is that if it is used well, it will do the following for you:

  1. Bring you a lot of traffic in a very short span of time.
  2. Give you some high PR back links.
  3. If the quality of the information you provide is good, you will get a lot of back links from other people’s websites.
  4. All this will happen for free.

Overall, social bookmarking is a powerful way to increase traffic to your website and as social bookmarking websites grow in popularity, so do the opportunities for you to promote your website.

In order to succeed in social bookmarking, you need to do a few things. It is like laying the foundation before you build a house. These things are:

  1. Join multiple boards: Digg, Reddit, Stumbleupon and Buzz are just some examples of social bookmarking websites. There are many out there and you should join as many as possible. You should try to join about 5-10 of these to start with.
  2. Make friends: The entire point of a social bookmarking site is to be social. If you have a friends group and you interact with them regularly, they will help to promote your websites by giving you high ratings.
  3. Don’t spam: If you spam the board or constantly ask your friends to endorse your links, they will ignore you. Active social bookmarkers receive in excess of a hundred endorsement requests per day. They tend to ignore most of them and the few that they do endorse are from their friends. Their friends include people who provide them with quality content that they are interested in.
  4. Content is king: Truer words were never spoken. If you are trying to promote a webpage that has a 5,000 word article about ball bearings, odds are, no one will read it. The content you promote has to be original, informative, interesting and entertaining. This is also a good way to do market research. If you’re promoting a website and if you don’t get too many hits from social bookmarking sites, odds are that your content is not very interesting. In that case, your organic traffic may not spend much time on your site either.
  5. Write a nice introduction: If a preview to a movie is boring, you probably won’t spend the time to watch the movie. Similarly, if your introduction for a site you’re trying to bookmark is not interesting, people may not want to come to your website.
  6. Landing page: It is not necessary to make your entire site entertaining or extraordinarily informative in order to succeed in social bookmarking. Let us say you sell TV’s on your website. It would be very hard to promote your site on a social bookmarking site. In order to combat that, you should create a landing page. This page should have a good video about the TV, or maybe even 10 tips to buying a new TV or something to that effect. This is easier to promote and when people read this, they may be tempted to visit other pages on your site.

Overall, social bookmarking is a useful way to promote your website. It takes a lot of research and some amount of trial and error in order to get the right combination of information and entertainment in order to entice people to come to your site, but if it is done correctly, it gives you access to a goldmine of traffic for little to no cost.

Social Bookmarking

Well that summed it all up, I couldn't have said it better myself just kidding, but lets give Emily Barney a hand for that great video and explanation on social bookmarking. If I were to give you my personal definition of social bookmarking before I saw this video and before I enrolled at the RU renegade university, it would probably go something like this a way to categorize and organize all your personal internet stuff in a convenient location on your computer, pretty good huh!For a more detailed and in-depth definition please refer here social bookmarking.

This has been the one area of attraction marketing that I found a bit confusing at times, but as I move though the video tutorials at renegade university using the renegade system I am becoming enlighten, again i'm constantly amazed at the valuable and relevant information where're being taught at the RU its definitely the best educational decision I've ever made, and i'd like to give an example of some of the great work that's being done at renegade university here's a article written by Terri Stallcop fellow student,  on  social  bookmarking  I  think  you'll  find  it  very  informative.

Want to improve your rankings with the search engines and with real people? Here's what can happen. Social bookmarking sites like Digg, Stumbleupon, Technorati, Del.icio.us, and others, are online communities. These sites didn't start out that way. The community of friends was a case of serendipity. Social Bookmarking didn't start out as an internet traffic generating strategy. It started out as, well, an online book marker. But now it has become a powerful tool for generating internet traffic. But, you have to have good content and equally important, you have to have friends.

Social bookmarking sites were designed to help log, file, and categorize favorite sites by "marking" them. Otherwise how would we find them again. After a while we would have too many to remember. Then the practice of sharing your bookmarked favorites with your friends began and the rest is history. Now if we really "dig" a website or an article online and want to share it with, say, the whole Digg community of friends we have there, we can. And presto! We've just added internet traffic to that site.

A word of caution, there's a right way and a wrong way to get involved in social bookmarking. The last thing to do, is to "share" an article of yours that you posted on, say on Squidoo, that has nothing but hype. Don't bookmark anything for others to review if it is not quality content. Even the search engines hate that. And real people will take you off their friends list.

Also, be sure to promote content other than just your own. That's being sociable. Being sociable online is the same as business networking meeting. Pretend you are visiting at a fundraiser dinner or at the Chamber of Commerce meeting, sharing and getting to know real people. Whether online or not, networks made up of real people tend to ignore those who are not socially acceptable. Online, hype and ongoing self-promotion is considered spamming.

You can bookmark your own site and share your own articles but not exclusively. For example at Digg you can digg your own articles, your own blog, etc. creating a link to your content elsewhere on the Internet. Asking your friends there to visit a recent blog article is fine. Almost everyone who uses social bookmarking now uses it to generate internet traffic. And high traffic to your content from a high traffic site like Digg and others will definitely get search engine attention. It is a great way to help build your prospect list and ultimately it helps build your business.

Also, add all the bookmark widgets, the icons, to your websites. Most social bookmarking sites have cute little icons that you can copy the code for in raw HTML and then put it on your websites. That way, people can bookmark your work by clicking on the icon If they are a member of Digg, or Stumbleupon, etc. When people do that, now you have an outgoing link from your site to a high traffic site. We need both, incoming and outgoing links to high ranking sites, in order to show up on the front page of search engine sites like google. Join bookmarking sites, socialize, bookmark sites including the work of others, and networking will build your business just like it always has.
